Additional Infomation
Leave it to the Marines! Originally, several numismatically minded Marines got together to form a coin club at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. They organized it in August 1962, installed officers and called it the MCRD Coin Club. In December 1972, the Marine Corps decided to raze their meeting place at the Hobby Room. Jack Hook asked the general where they could meet and was given the “General’s Meeting Room”. Refreshments were banned because the carpeting was so plush, but it was a awesome place to met. In 1974, MCRD Coin Club became the Military Coin Club in keeping with DOD Policy. When long time members Carl Sandburg, Lee Darnell, Jim Miller, and Charlie Klinert first became members, they wanted to be able to eat so the Club moved again, this time to the NTC Admirals Conference Room. When the NTC land was given to San Diego, the Club found a place to met at the Peninsula Community Center in Point Loma. After several years of meeting there the City of San Diego closed the Peninsula Community Center down due to budget cuts. They now meet every third Monday of the month at the Bonita Library in Bonita. The club is open to all military personnel (active or retired) and their dependents. The Military Coin Club joined the San Diego County Inter-Club Numismatic Club and its members have been actively participating in Council events ever since. |
