- U.S. and foreign currency (paper money): Generally not subject to Arizona sales tax when sold as currency.
- Precious metal bullion (gold, silver, platinum, etc.): Exempt from Arizona state and local sales tax. Arizona exempts both precious metal bullion and monetized bullion (legal-tender coins made from precious metals).
- Coins with numismatic (collector) value: This is where it gets more nuanced. Arizona's municipal tax rules distinguish between:
- Monetized bullion (generally tax-exempt), and
- Coins sold primarily for their numismatic value (collector value rather than metal value), which may be treated differently for certain city transaction privilege taxes. A coin is generally considered to have numismatic value if its selling price is at least twice its metal value and, for legal-tender coins, at least twice its face value.
