Sales tax in California

Numismatic coins (collector coins)

  • Less than $2,000 in a single transaction: Sales tax applies at the applicable state and local sales tax rate (which varies by location, generally between about 7.25% and over 10%).
  • $2,000 or more in a single transaction: The sale is generally exempt from California sales and use tax, provided it meets the requirements for a qualifying bulk sale under California law.

Gold and silver bullion

The same general rule applies:

  • Under $2,000: Taxable.
  • $2,000 or more in a single transaction: Generally exempt.

Paper currency

Paper currency that is sold as a collectible or investment item is generally treated similarly to collectible coins:

  • Under $2,000: Sales tax generally applies.
  • $2,000 or more: Generally exempt if the transaction qualifies under the exemption.

Legal tender used as money

If money is simply being exchanged for its face value (for example, exchanging one denomination for another), that is not subject to sales tax.
