Florida, the sales tax treatment of coins and currency depends on what is being sold.
Current Florida rules (2026)
- U.S. legal tender coins and currency (such as Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Silver Eagles, U.S. gold coins, or paper currency) are exempt from Florida sales tax, even when sold above face value.
- Foreign coins, non-legal-tender coins, tokens, medals, and similar numismatic items are generally subject to 6% Florida sales tax if they do not qualify for an exemption.
- Transactions over $500 involving otherwise taxable coins or currency are generally exempt from Florida sales tax, provided the dealer maintains the required documentation.
- Beginning in 2026, Florida also expanded exemptions for qualifying gold and silver coins recognized as legal tender in Florida that meet the statutory requirements.
