As of 2026, Kentucky does not charge sales tax on qualifying coin and currency purchases.
Here's how it works:
- Sales tax rate in Kentucky: 6% (no local sales taxes).
- Coins, currency, and bullion: Exempt from Kentucky sales and use tax if they meet the definitions in Kentucky law. The exemption has been retroactive to August 1, 2024.
What is exempt?
The exemption includes:
- Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion in the form of bars, ingots, or qualifying coins.
- Collectible coins and paper currency that are or have been legal tender and are sold as collectibles.
What is still taxable?
The exemption does not apply to items such as:
- Jewelry made from precious metals
- Sterling silverware
- Precious metal medallions that are not qualifying bullion
- Coins or currency incorporated into jewelry or other decorative items
