Sales tax in Maine

As of 2026, Maine does not impose sales tax on most coin and currency transactions that qualify under its exemptions, but the rules depend on what is being sold.

Here's the current situation:

  • Coins with numismatic (collector) value are exempt from Maine sales tax beginning January 1, 2026. This includes collector coins made of gold or silver, but does not include bullion under that particular exemption.
  • Gold and silver coins and bullion are also exempt from Maine sales and use tax under legislation that became effective January 1, 2026.
  • If an item does not qualify for an exemption, Maine's general sales tax rate is 5.5%.
