Sales tax in New Jersey

In New Jersey, the sales tax on coins and currency depends on what type of item is being sold:

  • Most coins, paper currency, and collectibles: 6.625% sales tax (New Jersey’s standard sales tax rate) unless they qualify for an exemption.
  • Investment metal bullion: 0% sales tax (exempt). This includes qualifying gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion where the value is based on the metal content rather than the form.
  • Investment coins: 0% sales tax (exempt) if the coin qualifies under New Jersey law. A qualifying investment coin must:
    • Be made of gold, silver, platinum, palladium, or another metal; and
    • Have a fair market value of at least $1,000 per coin.
