Sales tax in New York

In New York State, the sales tax treatment of coins and currency depends on what is being sold:

๐Ÿช™ Collector Coins (Numismatic Coins)

  • Generally taxable in New York.
  • Rare coins, collectible coins, commemorative coins, and coins sold for their collector value are treated as tangible personal property and are subject to sales tax.
  • The rate depends on the location of the sale (state + county + local taxes). New York's statewide base sales tax is 4%, but local rates can increase the total.

๐Ÿ’ต Paper Currency

  • Circulating currency sold at face value or as an exchange of money is generally not taxable.
  • Collectible paper money (old notes, rare currency, banknotes sold to collectors) is generally treated as a taxable collectible item.

๐Ÿฅ‡ Precious Metal Bullion (Gold/Silver/Platinum/Palladium)

Investment bullion can be exempt if it meets New York requirements:

  • The sale is more than $1,000 on a single invoice
  • The value depends only on the metal content
  • It is held in the same form as purchased (not fabricated or processed)
