Sales tax in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, the sales tax on qualifying coins and currency is generally 0% (exempt). Pennsylvania exempts investment metal bullion and investment coins from sales and use tax.

The details:

  • Exempt (no sales tax):
    • Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion where the value is based primarily on metal content
    • Legal-tender investment coins (U.S. or foreign) where the market value exceeds face value
    • Many collectible coins that meet Pennsylvania's definition of "investment coins"
  • Usually taxable (6% state sales tax + local where applicable):
    • Coin supplies (holders, flips, albums, cases, etc.)
    • Jewelry or artwork made from coins
    • Commemorative medallions (not considered investment coins under the exemption)

Pennsylvania's normal sales tax rate is 6%, with an additional 1% local tax in Allegheny County and 2% local tax in Philadelphia, but qualifying coins and bullion are exempt.
