Sales tax in South Carolina

In South Carolina, the sales tax on coins and currency is generally 0% because qualifying coins and currency are exempt from sales tax.

South Carolina exempts:

  • Gold, silver, and platinum bullion
  • Coins that are or have been legal tender in the United States or another country
  • Currency (paper money)

The exemption was added under South Carolina sales tax law effective July 1, 2007. Dealers claiming the exemption must maintain documentation identifying exempt sales.
