In Tennessee, sales tax on qualifying coins, currency, and bullion is 0% (exempt).
Effective May 27, 2022, Tennessee exempted sales of coins, currency, and bullion that meet these requirements:
- Manufactured in whole or in part from gold, silver, platinum, palladium, or other materials
- Used solely as legal tender, security, or a commodity in Tennessee, the U.S., or a foreign nation
- Sold primarily based on intrinsic value (precious metal value) or collectible value, rather than face value as money
The exemption also applies to collectible paper currency when it is sold primarily for its collectible value rather than as a medium of exchange.
Examples generally not subject to Tennessee sales tax:
- Gold and silver coins
- Bullion rounds and bars
- U.S. and foreign collectible coins
- Collectible paper money
Items that do not meet the exemption criteria (for example, certain non-qualifying collectibles, supplies, books, accessories, or unrelated merchandise) may still be taxable under Tennessee's normal sales tax rules. Tennessee's standard state sales tax rate is 7% plus applicable local tax.
