1896-S Barber Half Dollar — PCGS MS-66
Offered here is an exceptional 1896-S Barber Half Dollar, certified MS-66 by PCGS. Struck at the historic San Francisco Mint, this impressive Mint State example combines strong eye appeal, sharp detail, and beautifully preserved surfaces.
The obverse features Charles E. Barber’s classic portrait of Liberty, surrounded by thirteen stars and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, with the 1896 date boldly displayed below. The coin exhibits bright, satiny silver surfaces with attractive original character and subtle hints of natural golden toning. Liberty’s portrait retains excellent detail, while the fields display the remarkably clean appearance expected of the lofty MS-66 grade.
The reverse showcases the heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, arrows, and the E PLURIBUS UNUM banner. The small “S” mintmark beneath the eagle identifies this piece as a product of the San Francisco Mint. Strong definition is visible throughout the eagle, shield, feathers, stars, lettering, and surrounding denticles.
With an original mintage of 1,140,948 pieces, the 1896-S is a considerably scarcer Barber Half Dollar issue, and surviving examples become especially desirable at the Gem Mint State level. An MS-66 example represents a significant opportunity for the advanced Barber specialist, type collector, or collector assembling a high-grade U.S. silver collection.
